Dana and Mirtza Benscoter
Dana Benscoter began missionary service with the Church of the Nazarene in Honduras in 1983. His wife, Mirtza, is from Honduras and their three adult children were born and raised there.
While on the mission field in Honduras, the Benscoters had the opportunity to participate in a variety of capacities. They worked in construction, as Work and Witness coordinators, in compassionate ministries, as pastors of a local church, in church planting, and in leadership development.
The family returned to the United States in November 2003 specifically to obtain Mirtza’s U.S. citizenship. Upon return, they responded to the Northwest District’s desire to develop Cross-Cultural Ministries.
At this time, they work with the Northwest District Cross-Cultural leadership and ministries development while continuing to do mission work in Honduras.
Dana is convinced that the church needs to be focused on the missionary endeavor here on this mission field in the United States of America. Many of the same strategies and methods that have been utilized over the years in foreign mission areas need to be employed right here on the Northwest District. |

Joel and Heidi Smith have recently moved to Connell, Washington, in order to work closely with Pastors Paul and Alyssa Clark in the area of Hispanic outreach. Joel served as a self-supporting missionary in Honduras in the area of Work and Witness coordination for a number of years. He met Heidi while in Honduras, they were eventually married and now have two cute little “missionary children.”
After serving in Honduras, Joel and Heidi were contracted to coordinate Work and Witness teams in Peru. However, due to recent World Mission Division financial challenges, they had to return to the States in 2010. Joel had restarted his roofing business in Northern Idaho after returning from the mission field. However, still feeling the call to missionary service, he and his family have moved to Connell with the vision of raising a Spanish-Speaking congregation.

Discipleship and leadership development are principle elements of the work on the mission field. The missionary should always be looking to work him or herself out of a job while leaving responsible people and a healthy church behind. Therefore, by necessity the missionary must concentrate on Strong, Christian Leadership Development. Cross-Cultural Leadership Development has at its core the objective of implementing the educational process facilitated by the Church. The Church of the Nazarene has excellent discipleship curriculum which can be utilized to initiate the process. Also, Nazarene Clergy Development has written 24 modules that are designed for pastoral preparation. Implementation of those modules along with viable mentorship has proven very effective in pastoral as well as lay-leader preparation.
