Discipleship and leadership development are principle elements of the work on the mission field. The missionary should always be looking to work him or herself out of a job while leaving responsible people and a healthy church behind. Therefore, by necessity the missionary must concentrate on Strong, Christian Leadership Development. Cross-Cultural Leadership Development has at its core the objective of implementing the educational process facilitated by the Church. The Church of the Nazarene has excellent discipleship curriculum which can be utilized to initiate the process. Also, Nazarene Clergy Development has written 24 modules that are designed for pastoral preparation. Implementation of those modules along with viable mentorship has proven very effective in pastoral as well as lay-leader preparation. Our formula is: EQUIP – This is the educational aspect of the process. Equipping is “providing the essential tools that the minister needs in order to carry out the work. EMPOWER – This step is where the leader helps the student into a defined ministry. The student is not left alone. He or she is accompanied by the teacher or mentor. The mentor is responsible to a certain extent to help the student be successful in ministry. The student is given permission to begin ministry participant while still involved in the educational process. ENGAGE – As the student becomes more familiar and stable in his or her ministry area, the teacher or mentor does not necessarily need to be constantly accompanied as he or she has proven competent to effectively carry out the ministry. EVALUATION – This is a natural aspect of the process as we recognized that adjustments are always needed at one point in time or the other. Without consistent evaluation we have a tendency to lose step with the rapidly changing cultures in which we live today. Healthy congregations and ministries will be started as healthy leadership is developed and God calls His faithful ministers in to areas of service. |
